Zaida Puni is a softball player who works wonders in softball for the University of Tennessee Athletics. Prior to her Tennessee career, she chose Oklahoma over Arizona and Florida. While assisting St. Anthony’s in the 2019 CIF Division 6 Championship, she was named to the All-CIF first team. During the summer of 2019, she helped lead her club team to the 2019 18U USA World FastPitch Championship. She was ranked number 25 nationally by Extra Inning Softball and number 79 by FloSoftball.
Early life
Zaida is from Carson, California. Born in the 2000s, she is the daughter of Selestina and Iotamo Puni. Zaida grew up in her hometown with her three siblings, Zaniah, Juju, and Zyra. She comes from an athletic family as her uncle Michael Alo was a football player for USC, while her aunt Adrienne Alo was a softball player for Oregon State. Zaida is studying psychology and decided to study at the University of Tennessee because of the academic location and the warm atmosphere.
She transferred to UT from Oklahoma after her freshman year and has four years left to play. Zaida was awarded the Smokey Hensley Women’s Athletics Endowed Scholarship. She attended St. Anthony’s High School in Carson, California, and played travel ball for the OC Batbusters. During his junior year, she batted .382 for a total of 31 hits, 21 runs, 27 RBIs, 26 stolen bases, and 16 homers.
Zaida Puni career
As a freshman, she appeared in 16 games, mostly on third base or as a pinch hitter, hit .357 in 14 at-bats, hit one home run, three doubles, and drove in six runs. She played as a pinch hitter in the May 23 regional game against Wichita State and had a .786 slugging percentage and a .399 on-base percentage.
Zaida Puni scored one in her singles match against Morgan State in the regional championships. She also made an appearance at third base on May 21. On May 4, she won with a double at Wichita State 1-1. She hit a double and an RBI on her one-plate performance against Liberty (3/14) and hit her first career home run, a two-run bomb, against Sam Houston (3/7). Zaida had a season-high three RBIs in a 1-on-3 performance, three runs scored, and a double against New Mexico on February 27. She made her collegiate debut in Houston and recorded one shot as a pinch hitter (2/21).
After hitting four home runs in NCAA regional play in her junior year, her first hit against Texas in the NCAA Knoxville Super Regional (05/26) was a rocket-high three-point run over the left-center scoreboard. She recorded a multi-homer game in NCAA regional play, leaving the yard in the first inning (two-run shot) and fifth inning (solo) for the second time in three days against Indiana (5/1).
She started and finished the Lady Vols’ scoring in Tennessee’s 12-0 win over Northern Kentucky on the opening day of the NCAA Knoxville Regional (5/19) with a solo home run in the first and a triple bomb in the fourth.
