Christian Horner Career
Horner’s journey in the world of car racing began in the humble beginnings of karting. It wasn’t until he won a Formula Renault scholarship in 1991 that his career in car racing truly took off. Horner made his debut in the 1992 British Formula Renault Championship with Manor Motorsport. His rookie season was marked with exceptional performances, clinching a race win and finishing as the highest-placed rookie. In 1993, he stepped up to British Formula Three, racing for P1 Motorsport. That season, he won five races and finished second in the Class B Championship. He then went on to compete with Fortec and ADR teams in 1994 and 1995 respectively, before joining the TOM’S team in 1996. During that year, he also took part in the British Formula Two.
In 1997, Horner ascended to Formula 3000, and that marked the founding of his very own team, Arden. Setting up the team with borrowed money, including a loan from his father, he convinced P1 Motorsport founder, Roly Vincini, to become his race engineer. It was also during this time that he acquired a second-hand trailer from Helmut Marko, his main rival as a manager in F3000, who was the head of the Red Bull Junior Team at the time. Horner continued to race for Arden in F3000 for 1998, but it was at a pre-season test at Estoril that he realized that he was not capable of replicating the level of commitment shown by Juan Pablo Montoya, a Colombian driver whom he followed through the circuit’s high-speed first corner. Consequently, he decided to step back from driving and focus solely on developing the Arden team at the end of the season.
