Early life

Condoleezza Rice was born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1954 to John, a minister and dean of college, and Angelena, a high school teacher. She is her only child. Rice’s formative years were spent in Birmingham’s vibrant Titusville neighborhood. She later resided on the Stillman College campus in Tuscaloosa, where her father was a professor. This upbringing in close proximity to science undoubtedly played a role in shaping Rice’s intellectual environment and furthering her educational path.

Rice attended St. Mary’s Academy, an all-girls Catholic school after her family moved to Denver, Colorado in 1967. She graduated from high school at age 16 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Denver. When she was 19, she earned her MA in the same discipline from the University of Notre Dame in 1975.

Rice first joined the State Department in 1977, during the Carter Administration, as an intern. She began studying Russian at Moscow State University in 1979 and later did an internship at RAND Corporation in California. Later, in 1981, she received her Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Denver. At the same time, she was also a Stanford University Arms Control and Disarmament Program Fellow, marking the beginning of her long association with Stanford.

Condoleezza is currently the director of Stanford University’s Hoover Institute. In the 1980s she began her career as an assistant professor of political science at Stanford University, where she later became known as an expert on the Soviet Union. Rice worked for Chevron Corporation under George P. Shultz before returning to Stanford in 1992. During her time there, she visited Kazakhstan as a board member.
