Karlyn Pickens is a freshman softball player from Weaverville, North Carolina and she is the driving force behind the Tennessee Lady Volunteers softball team. The 6-foot-1 athlete is among the top 10 recruits and is familiar with Power 5 facilities, spurring interest from top schools across the country, including top 25 SEC schools and prominent Pac-12 schools. Karlyn Pickens was born in 2004 and is a freshman. Raised by her parents Phillip and Rebecca, she has two brothers, Kolton and Rayce Pickens. Karlyn recognizes the numerous sacrifices made by her parents. Both of her brothers are athletes as Kolton competed in cross country running while Rayce played both baseball and football for his college team.
Since her early years, she has competed in travel ball tournaments across the country, from California to Colorado and even within her home state of South Carolina. She was the No. 2 pitcher and No. 5 overall in the Class of 2022 according to Extra Inning Softball. On April 27, 2021, she was named Extra Inning Softball’s National High School Player of the Week after scoring with 17 strikeouts perfect play, and hit .500 in three games with two home runs and seven intentional walks, earning her a spot as one of 21 high school juniors competing in the 2021 PGF Futures All-American Game.
She threw one perfect play and four no-hitters last spring and was named 2019 WMAC Softball Player of the Year as a freshman and 2021 WMAC Softball Pitcher of the Year. Her 207 strikeouts in 2021 came with an amazing .41 earned run average. She batted 11 batters in 6.2 innings to help in UT’s 9-2 win over Texas A&M in 4/2 of her freshman year. In Tennessee’s 1-0 win over Ole Miss on March 11, she threw a full-game shutout, conceding just one goal and beating eight batters. 0
She threw three innings to relief and knocked out five batsmen in a 7-1 win over Belmont at 3/5, and threw the first perfect game of her collegiate career in an 8-0 win over Tennessee at 3/4 and retired all 15 batters she faced while batting five. She switched to Clemson on 02/25. 1-0 and scored eight goals, and on 17.02. she knocked out North Dakota State 8-0 by throwing six scoreless innings and scoring four goals. Tennessee’s 9-2 win over Illinois on 9/2. was their first collegiate save, while Tennessee’s 21-1 win over Howard on 9/2. marked her first college strikeout.
