Quinn Mathews emerged as a star for the Stanford Cardinals during the 2023 NCAA Division 1 baseball tournament. Early life
Quinn Mathews was born on October 4, 2000, in Mission Viejo, California to Susan and Robert Mathews and has an older sister, Remy. He attended Aliso Niguel High School in Aliso Viejo, California before enrolling at Stanford. From 2015 to 2019 he played association football for the Saddleback Cowboys.

As a freshman, he went 1-2 with a 4.71 ERA in four starts and fanned out 14 batters in 21.0 innings. He made his collegiate debut against Cal State Fullerton, throwing a career-best 7.0 innings with a career-best six strikeouts. As a sophomore, he made the Pac-12 Roll of honor. He made 18 appearances, including 14 starts, threw 66 2/3 innings, knocked out 60 batters, and allowed just one run in a combined shutout.
He won the game against Santa Clara by pitching five innings without hitting and hitting eight batters while Stanford combined for a two-hit shutout. Mathews hit a career-best six-batter performance in a scoreless eighth inning against UC Irvine and then clinched the win in a six-out and a third inning against USC despite conceding two runs in seven hits.
Rise to Fame
He was selected as a junior in the 19th round of the 2022 Major League Baseball Draft but chose to remain at Stanford instead. He made 27 appearances, allowing just a .213 batting average against him, hit 111 batters in 99 1/3 innings, and posted a 9-2 record with a 3.08 ERA (the highest on the team). Quinn started the year as a starter but was moved to the bullpen to help the Cardinals in the late innings.
A second-place Pac-12 in earned run average, wins, strikeouts, saves, and shots allowed per game. He capped a 1-0 shutout against No. 3 Oregon State with a 1-2-3 in the 10th inning, hitting two batters for his first save of his career and improving his record this season to 2-0.
He won after throwing four innings of a shutout against Utah and saved a game against USC by going the last 4 2/3 innings and knocking out seven batters. Quinn won the crucial sixth inning of an NCAA playoff against UCSB and saved two six-out games in the Super-Regional against Connecticut.
