Andrea Canning was born on December 10, 1972 in Blue Mountain, Ontario and grew up in Collingwood, Ontario. She went to the University of Western Ontario, where she received her degree in psychology in 1994. She also received an additional degree in radio and television arts from Ryerson Polytechnic University.

In the early days of her career, Andrea had a few assignments at WCPO-TV in Cincinnati. While working as a reporter or co-anchor for the station, she became a member of the evening news program. From 1999 to 2001 she worked for WPTV-TV in West Palm Beach, Florida for three years.
Before that, she worked for CKVR-TV in Barrie, Ontario for a further two years from 1997 to 1999, simultaneously holding the positions of reporter and presenter. Andrea also worked as a morning anchor for WXVT-CBS before getting a new job at network CKVR (from 1996 to 1997), she was hired as a commissioned editor for the tabloid TV show Extra.
She lived in Los Angeles for a short time, during which time she interned for Baywatch and shared a home with future media personality and host Ryan Seacrest.
