Elise Cranny is an American middle-distance and long-distance runner. She was a member of the women’s 4×1500 meter relay team that set a world record, and she also maintains the American indoor record for the 5000-meter distance. Elise Cranny was born on May 9, 1996. Cranny was born in Niwot, Colorado, but she spent much of her childhood in Boulder. Her parents, Bob and Tracy, plus her two sisters, Emily and Lauren, raised the former Olympian.

She ran collegiately for Stanford, where she earned 12 All-American honors and placed second in four NCAA Division I national championships.
After graduating in 2018, she is now a professional runner with the Bowerman Track Club. On July 31, 2020, Cranny participated in a Bowerman Track Club intrasquad competition as a member of the 4 1500-meter relay team alongside Colleen Quigley, Karissa Schweizer, and Shelby Houlihan. The team’s time of 16:27.02 was faster than the previous world record, set by Team Kenya, by three seconds.
Elise Cranny has the top 10000m and second quickest 5000m times among American participants heading into the 2021 US Olympic Trials. On June 21, 2021, in Eugene, Oregon, Cranny won by 0.3 seconds over Bowerman Track Club teammate Karissa Schweizer, clocking a time of 15 minutes, 27 seconds, and earning a spot on the United States Olympic team.
Cranny completed the final 400 meters in a time of 63.72 seconds. Cranny competed in the women’s 5000-meter event at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo and finished 13th. On February 11, 2022, Cranny set a new American record for the indoor 5000m at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational at Boston University, finishing 14 seconds quicker than Shalane Flanagan’s previous mark of 14:47.
