General Mark Milley or Mark Alexander Milley is a retired United States Army general who served as the 20th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from October 1, 2019, to September 30, 2023. He previously served as the 39th chief of staff of the Army from August 14, 2015, to August 9, 2019.
Early life
Mark Milley was born on June 18, 1958, in Winchester, Massachusetts, United States of America. Milley’s father Alexander (1924–2015) enlisted in the US Navy as a Navy Corpsman in March 1943, served in the 4th Marine Division, and landed on the islands of Kwajalein, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima. His father worked as a restaurateur and grocer after the war, while her mother, Mary Elizabeth (née Murphy), worked as a Navy nurse at a Seattle hospital.

After graduating, Mark Milley began his professional career. Milley has served with the 82nd Airborne Division, 5th Special Forces Group, 7th Infantry Division, 2nd Infantry Division, Joint Readiness Training Center, 25th Infantry Division, Joint Operations Staff, and the Secretary of Defense’s Military Assistant. In the last 39 years. Milley has held leadership positions in eight divisions and special forces, including command of the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry, 2nd Infantry Division; commanded 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light) from December 2003 to July 2005; and Deputy Commander General of Operations for the 101st Airborne Division from July 2007 to July 2009.
From 2012 to 2014 he was the commander of III Corps at Fort Hood, Texas, and from 2014 to 2015 he was the commanding general of US Army Forces Command at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. On August 14, 2015, he was appointed Army Chief of Staff. Army Forces Command consists of three commands: Army Forces Command, Army Material Command, and Army Training and Doctrine Command. It was one of the largest attempts at reform in more than forty years, and it rivaled the Army’s top three commands: Army Forces Command, Army Material Command, and Army Training and Doctrine Command.
Afghanistan situation
President Biden and the National Security Council were initially warned by Milley that withdrawing American forces from Afghanistan risked the re-emergence of the Taliban. Milley, who had advised the Biden administration on the risks and dangers of withdrawing troops from Afghanistan, later stated that he was not aware of any intelligence reports that suggested the Taliban could overrun the Afghan capital, Kabul, in 11 days. Milley’s judgment on the decision to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan has been questioned by many, having previously said withdrawing troops was risky, sparking debate. Some authorities, such as Utah’s 2nd District Congressman Chris Stewart, have called on Milley to step down and admit responsibility for the turmoil that followed after the fall of Kabul on August 15, 2021.
