Jack Smith is an American attorney behind the indictment of Donald Trump in the January 6, 2021 Capitol attacks Department of Public Integrity. He also served as Chief Prosecutor at the Kosovo Specialist Chambers, a tribunal in The Hague set up to investigate and try war crimes committed during the Kosovo War.
Early life
Smith was born in 1969 in the United States. John L. “Jack” Smith was born to American parents and grew up in the Syracuse suburb of Clay, New York. He has not given any information about himself or his family to the media. Jack Smith graduated from Liverpool High School in 1987, where he was a football and baseball player. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree summa cum laude from the State University of New York at Oneonta and a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School in 1994.

While serving as Assistant District Attorney, he was a member of the bureau’s Sex Crimes and Domestic Violence Division. In 2010, he was appointed chief of the Public Integrity Section (PIS) of the US Department of Justice. During his five years as PIS chief, Smith prosecuted a series of corruption cases, including those against Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell and New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, US Representative Rick Renzi, and CIA agent Jeffrey Sterling, who disclosed state secrets.
In 2015, he was appointed Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee. Following David Rivera’s resignation in March 2017, Smith served as acting US Attorney until Donald Q. Cochran’s nomination in September. In 2017, he was named vice president and general counsel of Hospital Corporation of America. Smith was appointed Chief Prosecutor of the Kosovo Chamber of Specialists in The Hague on May 7, 2018.

On November 18, 2022, United States Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Smith as special counsel to lead the criminal investigation into Donald Trump’s reactions to the January 6 attack on the US Capitol and Trump’s handling and storage of government records, including confidential documents, at his estate in Mar-a-Lago. He first operated in the Netherlands while recovering from a broken leg sustained when he was hit by a scooter while driving. Smith then traveled back to the United States. After a few months, Smith filed charges against Trump.
