Jacques started as a physiotherapist for the Free State Cheetash in the year 1997. He also took the position of Free State Cheetahs’ Strength and Conditioning Coach when former South African national team flanker Rassie Erasmus became head coach in 2005.
During a season in which the squad won the domestic Currie Cup title for just the second time in the team’s history, he continued in that capacity. In the year 2008 he went to Cape Town to join the team Erasmus as a director of the game rugby and also a defense coach for the team Stormers and Western Province.
Nienaber moved to Munster in 2016 after Erasmus, taking up the roles of director of rugby and defense coach, respectively. Nienaber became assistant coach and defense master, and Erasmus served as director of rugby, they returned to South Africa in 2018 and took control of the national team.
They orchestrated South Africa’s 32-12 victory over England in the 2019 Rugby World Cup final in Japan. But in 2020 he became the head coach and Erasmus was the director of rugby. They both worked together making the team very strong. Then he managed to lead the team Springboks to win matches against a strong team in the world.
