Rachel Anne Maddow is an American television host, author, broadcast journalist and commentator known for her night show The Rachel Maddow Show on the MSNBC channel. The Emmy Award-winning presenter is well respected for her years of experience and also for being the first lesbian presenter to host a prime-time news show.

Early life

Rachel was born on April 1, 1973, in Castro Valley, California, United States to parents Robert B. Maddow and mother Elaine Gosse. Her father is a former US Air Force Captain and attorney, while her mother worked as a school program administrator. She grew up with her brother David and is known to be of mixed ethnicity with Irish, Dutch, Jewish, and Canadian ancestry. Rachel graduated from Castro Valley High School and is known to have completed her Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy from Stanford University. She also completed her MA and DPhil in Political Science from Lincoln College, University of Oxford.

Rachel Maddow’s career

Rachel began her career as a radio host on WRNX in 1999, after which she hosted the show “Big Breakfast” on WRSI for over two years. In the years that followed, she continued to host radio shows such as Unfiltered 2004 and The Rachel Maddow Show 2005 with MSNBC. She has also been a regular TV host on MSNBC’s Tucker show and also became a political analyst for the station in 2008.

In 2008 she also began hosting the show Countdown with Keith Olbermann. That same year, the network announced Rachel’s show, The Rachel Maddow Show, which aired every night during prime time. The show soon caught up and became one of the channel’s most successful shows.

Widespread Fame

She has received several awards over the years including the 2011 and 2017 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Interview, Outstanding Discussion, etc. In addition to presenting, she also works as an author. She wrote her first book, Drift, in 2012, in which she discussed the military in post-war America. Her next work was published in 2019 entitled Blowout: Corrupted Democracy and her most recent work was published in 2020 entitled Bag Man: The Wild Crimes.

Recently, at the 63rd Grammy Awards 2021, she received the Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album for the audiobook version of her 2019 book Blowout. Her work has also been featured in The New York Times and The Washington Post over the years. She is now on hiatus from her show until April 2022 to focus on other aspects of her work and also to help with the film adaptation of her book Bag-man.

Rachel is a member of the LGBTQ community and came out as a lesbian through her college newspaper. She is currently known to be in a relationship with Susan Mikula whom she met back in 1999.
