Early life

Karrine Steffans was born on August 24, 1978, in Saint Thomas, US Virgin Islands, and moved to Florida at the age of ten. She has written about her difficult childhood growing up in poverty, emotionally and physically abused by an alcoholic mother and an uncaring father. Her childhood was clearly listless.

At the age of 16, Karrine ran away and began working as an exotic dancer. She spent a month on the street. She moved to Los Angeles in 1999 after living in New York and Arizona. Steffans’ friendship with the famous Kool G brought her into contact with the burgeoning hip-hop music scene.

Friends she made in the industry through Kool G’s contacts began teaching her the ropes after she moved to Los Angeles. She made her video modeling debut in 2000 at the age of 21 in Jay’s “Hey Z’s Papi” video. R. Kelly, LL Cool J and Mystikal were all featured in Steffans’ videos.

Steffans modeled for the Hollywood Swimsuit issue of Smooth magazine in 2004 after starring in A Man Apart and was pictured on the cover the following year to coincide with the release of her first book. Karrine was featured on the cover of King magazine in an exclusive photoshoot in 2007.

Steffans starred opposite Vin Diesel in the 2003 action film A Man Apart. Datwon Thomas and DJ Rhude released Freaky Flows, a mixtape with a spoken word introduction and epilogue by Karrine Steffans, which was made available for free through King magazine in 2007.

Confessions of a Video Vixen (2005), The Vixen Diaries (2007), and The Vixen Manual: How to Find, Seduce, and Keep the Man You Want (2009) are all New York Times bestsellers by Karrine Steffans.

She dedicated her first book to her son and donated a portion of the proceeds to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. According to Essence Magazine editor Michaela Angela Davis, Steffans is reaching out “to those who may have dismissed previous protests against rap’s misogyny.”

Steffans spoke to young women in college about the lesser-known risks of the entertainment industry.
