Katy Chevigny is the wife of Jack Smith, the famous attorney behind the impartial investigation into Trump’s role in the January 6 capital attacks. Katy is a producer and filmmaker best known for E-Team (2014), Deadline (2004), and Cameraperson (2016). She has received several awards for her work and has produced or directed more than 30 documentaries.
Early life
Chevigny was born in 1968 to Bell Gale Chevigny and Paul Chevigny. In 2001, her father headed the Human Rights Clinic at New York University, where he also taught law. Her mother taught literature at Purchase College and published Doing Time: 25 Years of Prison Writing in 1999. Chevigny earned a recognized degree from Yale University.

Chevigny was a social worker who began her film career in Chicago before moving to New York City in 1997 to co-found Big Mouth Productions with a fellow student, Julia Pimsleur. In 2002, Pimsleur gave up the company. Dallas Brennan had been Chevigny’s business partner since 2004. Marilyn Ness joined the company in 2022.
She co-directed with Kirsten Johnson the 2004 film Deadline, which won the Thurgood Marshall Journalism Award. The documentary, which addressed Illinois Gov. George Ryan’s decision to commute the death sentences of all death row inmates in the state, was purchased and aired on Dateline NBC, a rare example of action by a major commercial network.
Chevigny directed “Election Day,” which premiered at the 2007 South By Southwest Film Festival and aired on POV television in 2008.
She co-directed the feature-length documentary E-Team with Ross Kauffman, which won Best Cinematography at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and was made available on Netflix in October 2014. She was the producer of the 2014 film 1971.
Winner of an Alfred I. duPont Award in 2015 and shown on Al Jazeera America, Hard Earned comprised six segments that she directed. Chevigny co-produced the 2018 film Dark Money with Kimberly Reed. PBS obtained the distribution rights to the film and intended to include it in the documentary’s POV.
