Chevigny was born in 1968 to Bell Gale Chevigny and Paul Chevigny. In 2001, her father headed the Human Rights Clinic at New York University, where he also taught law. Her mother taught literature at Purchase College and published Doing Time: 25 Years of Prison Writing in 1999. Chevigny earned a recognized degree from Yale University.

Chevigny was a social worker who began her film career in Chicago before moving to New York City in 1997 to co-found Big Mouth Productions with a fellow student, Julia Pimsleur. In 2002, Pimsleur gave up the company. Dallas Brennan had been Chevigny’s business partner since 2004. Marilyn Ness joined the company in 2022.

She co-directed with Kirsten Johnson the 2004 film Deadline, which won the Thurgood Marshall Journalism Award. The documentary, which addressed Illinois Gov.
