Parag Agrawal is an Indian-American software engineer who was CEO of Twitter Inc. Parag was fired from Twitter along with three other top executives following Elon Musk’s purchase of the company on October 27, 2022. Early Life & Education
Parag was born in 1983/84 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India to a middle-class family and spent his childhood in Khargar. His father was a government official and his mother was a retired teacher. His father used to work as a senior official for the Indian Ministry of Atomic Energy. Agarwal continued his education at Atomic Energy Central School No.4 where his classmate Shreya Ghosal was. He won the gold medal in Turkey’s 2001 International Physics Olympiad. He then received a degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay in 2005. Parag Agrawal later moved to the United States to pursue his Ph.D. in Computer Science at Stanford University.

In October 2017, Twitter announced that Parag would join the organization as chief technology officer (CTO) following the departure of former CTO Adam Massinger. Agarwal joined the network in 2011 as a distinguished software engineer. Before joining Twitter in this position, Parag held senior leadership positions at Microsoft Research and Yahoo! Research. According to Parag’s Twitter leadership page, he is responsible for Twitter’s technology strategy and machine learning oversight. His work was limited to AI in the consumer, sales, and science teams. In December 2019, the CEO of Twitter mentioned that Agarwal would be joining the team responsible for Project Bluesky.
It was like an independent team of open sources that would develop an open and decentralized social media standard with controlled abusive and misleading information on the platform. On November 29, 2021, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey announced that he was stepping down from Twitter and naming Agarwal as the company’s new CEO. After the announcement, Agarwal was caught off guard by the critical conversation on Twitter, where he tweeted in 2010 saying, “If you don’t differentiate between Muslims and extremists, why should I differentiate between whites and racists?”. The tweet was made in connection with Asif Mandvi during a story on The Daily Show.
