Patty Tavatanakit is a professional golfer who won her first major championship at ANA Inspiration 2021 in April. The 21-year-old from Bangkok, Thailand surprised the field by winning by two shots and dominating the competition from start to finish. She fended off Lydia Ko’s late push. Tavatanakit won the ANA Inspiration, one of the five majors in women’s golf, becoming the first rookie and Thai player to do so.
Early life
Patty was born on October 11, 1999, in Bangkok, Thailand. Tavatanakit’s passion for golf began when she was 3 years old after Tavatanakit’s father gave her her first set of clubs. She started competing at the age of 8 and won 60 out of 90 competitions she entered as a junior.
She won the 2014 Callaway Junior World Golf Championship for girls and was named the 2015–16 Thailand Amateur Ladies Golf Association Player of the Year after winning the Junior Golf Association’s Rolex Tournament of Champions and the Ping Invitational.

Tavatanakit attended UCLA for two years. In addition to being named Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) and Pac-12 Conference Freshman of the Year, being named a two-time WGCA First Team All-American, and being named an All-Pac-12 First Team, Tavatanakit has won seven collegiate tournaments. In addition, she received numerous honors.
Patty turned pro in 2019 when she joined the Symetra Tour. For her remarkable start to professional golf, she was named Gaelle Truet Rookie of the Year, winning three times in just eight tournaments. After joining the LPGA Tour in 2020, Tavatanakit played her first game at the Gainbridge LPGA in Boca Rio. In her debut season, she finished in the top ten four times, including finishing runner-up at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.
Her breakthrough came at ANA Inspiration 2021 when she hit a 10-under 62 mark in the first round, giving her a four-shot lead. She maintained her lead throughout the tournament. Tavatanakit, the second youngest ANA Inspiration winner after Morgan Pressel, finished 18-under 270. She made history by becoming the first person to win a Major without having competed in any Major before as a pro.
