Early life
Rafael was born on June 3, 1986 in Manacor, Balearic Islands, Spain to his parents Ana Maria Parera Femenias and Sebastian Nadal Homar. He grew up in an entrepreneurial family and his father also owns an insurance company, a restaurant and a glass company. He grew up with his sister Maria Isabel and his uncles are known for being associated with football and tennis. Rafael hasn’t revealed much about his education but it is believed he completed his high school education at a local school in Manacor. He received several offers to move to Barcelona or the United States, but stayed behind to complete his education.

Rafael started playing tennis at the age of 8 when he first competed in the U12 regional tennis championship and soon at the age of 12 he was winning the Spanish and European tennis titles. In addition to tennis, he also played football and is an avid fan of Real Madrid club. He turned professional at age 15 and won his first ATP match, while at age 18 he became the youngest player to achieve a Davis Cup singles win. Rafael won his first Grand Slam title in 2005 at the French Open against Mariano Puerta and won 3 consecutive French Open titles in the following years.
He lost his first-ever Wimbledon season in 2006 but won against world No. 1 Rodger Federer in the 2008 season. Over the years he has had multiple wins at the Australian Open, Wimbledon, US Open and French Open tournaments. Rafael currently holds 1 Australian Open title, 13 French Open titles, 2 Wimbledon titles and 4 US Open titles. He also holds the title for most men’s singles titles in a single event for his performance at Monte Carlo Masters.

Nadal also represented Spain in singles at the Beijing 2008 Olympics, securing gold. Later, at the 2016 Rio Olympics, he again won gold in doubles. He has also won 5 Davis Club Championships. Rafael also runs a training center as the Rafa Nadal Sports Center in his hometown where he trained in various sports as well as health and fitness. He also has academies in Greece, Kuwait and Mexico.
He recently picked up another win at the 2020 French Open and retained his title as King of the Clay Court. Additionally, he managed to record a win over Russian player Daniil Medvedev at the 2022 Australian Open, winning two sets and taking his Grand Slam tally to 21 and 89 in ATP singles. He has overtaken his contemporaries Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer to become the player with the most titles of all time.
