coaching
Trevino, a freshman third baseman, benefited greatly from Folmar’s coaching in 2012 when he was named Summit League Newcomer of the Year and named to two All-America freshman teams. In 2006, the Golden Eagles finished in the top 25 in every major college baseball poll and made the Super Regional round of the NCAA tournament. Folmar’s offense moved the team forward as he was in the top 20 nationally for batting average, runs scored, and slugging percentage. Folmar spent the last nine seasons as an assistant coach before becoming head coach at ORU.
Rise to Fame
He is widely regarded as one of the best batting coaches in college baseball. During Folmar’s nine years as coach, the Golden Eagles went to the NCAA Regionals every year and won the Summit League Championship. The Eagles went 30-26 under Folmar in 2014, including 15-15 in the Southland Conference game. That included a win against then-No. 8 Oklahoma State at home and a win of the season against then-No. 28 Oklahoma.
In 2015, Anthony Sequeria and Matt Whatley were the leaders of the team. Sequeria was a finalist for the John Olerud Award, given to the nation’s top two-way player, and Whatley was named a Freshman All-America by four separate media outlets.
The Folmar Golden Eagles ended 2015 with a 41-16 aggregate record and a 25-5 record in the Summit League, making it into the postseason for the first time in three years. The Golden Eagles have been particularly successful against their Big 12 rivals, edging away 5-1 this season. These included away wins against Oklahoma, No. 12 Texas Tech, and No. 10 Oklahoma State.
The Eagles once again dominated the Summit League in 2021, winning the regular-season title. Folmar was once again named Coach of the Year by his peers in the Summit League after leading his team to a 31-23 overall record and a 19-7 record. The Golden Eagles started heating up in March, winning two of three games against LSU No. 8 and at Dallas Baptist. ORU secured the regular-season championship by winning eight of their last ten games. With a 6-4 win over Western Illinois on April 15, 2022, Folmar became only the fourth head coach in program history to have 300 career wins.
