Tim Scott is an American politician who has run for the 2024 presidential election. Tim was assigned a position on the Republican Party team to represent South Carolina in the US Senate in 2013, and went on to win a special election the following year. He made his mark as the first African-American senator in history to be elected from a Southern state since Reconstruction. Prior to his time in the Senate, Scott was also a member of the US House of Representatives from 2011 to 2013.
Early life
Tim Scott was born on September 19, 1965, in North Charleston, South Carolina, to Frances, a nursing assistant, and Ben Scott Sr. After his parents divorced when he was just seven years old, Tim Scott grew up poor with his mother. Despite the challenges of working-class life, Scott’s older brother served as a sergeant major in the US Army.
After attending RB Stall High School, Scott received a part-time football scholarship to attend Presbyterian College in 1983-84 before eventually earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from Charleston Southern University in 1988. A graduate of South Carolina’s Palmetto Boys State program, Scott credits this experience as pivotal in his decision to enter public service. After graduating, he worked as an insurance salesman and financial advisor and is currently the owner of the Tim Scott Allstate insurance agency.

Scott ventured into electoral politics in 1995 by running for a post on Charleston County Council, which he won and served on until 2008, when he was a member in 2009.
In 2010, Scott ran for a seat in the US House of Representatives and emerged victorious two years later with support from various Tea Party organizations. The essential information regarding Scott’s successful bid for a Congressional seat remains unchanged. He defeated Paul Thurmond, son of the late Senator Strom Thurmond, in the primary and easily won the general election.
House of Representatives
In 2011, Scott took office as a member of the US House of Representatives. Following James DeMint’s resignation as Senator in 2013, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley selected Scott to succeed him in his seat. Scott emerged victorious in a special election in 2014 to complete DeMint’s term as Senator.
Scott took a clear conservative stance and usually aligned himself with the party leadership. He opposed various measures proposed by President Barack Obama’s administration. In particular, he aimed to repeal the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (2010; PPACA). Scott prioritized balancing the federal budget through a constitutional amendment and supported prohibiting earmarking. On social issues, he did not support abortion rights or same-sex marriage.
US Senate
Scott was re-elected to the Senate in 2016 and went on to support numerous policies by Republican President Donald Trump. He supported Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement and voted to repeal the PPACA in 2017, despite that legislation failing. In addition, he played a pivotal role in the passage of a major tax reform bill that same year. In 2019, Trump was impeached after allegations that he withheld aid to Ukraine to force it to launch a corruption probe into Joe Biden, his political rival.
The impeachment process was subsequently shifted to the Senate, which was under Republican control at the time. In February 2020, Scott voted to acquit Trump, and as a result of that partisan vote, the President was acquitted. During his first full term in the Senate, Scott became more outspoken on issues related to racism, particularly when Trump made statements that some considered racist.
In 2018, he joined as a co-sponsor of a bill aimed at establishing lynching as a federal crime. Two years later, amid nationwide demonstrations against racial injustice, he drafted the Republican proposal to solve the problem. However, opponents of the resulting bill, which failed to win Senate approval, argued that it would not adequately address police reform.
