Early life
Allen was born on March 13, 1987, in Chewelah, Washington. His father was a preacher at the local church, and his mother was a nurse. Allen started singing at his father’s church and was raised basically on gospel music. He was the lead singer in church services and he also played guitar. Allen discovered soul music in his teens. He developed a keen interest in classical music and collected albums from the 1960s and 1970s. Allen was only fifteen when he first heard Stevie Wonder’s Innervisions album.
He got the inspiration to take his music career seriously from his close friend Stacie Orrico. After her success in music, he decided to follow the same path. He graduated from high school at 18 and then moved to Spokane. He entered a community college in Spokane, but transferred to Bible College a year later.
