Ayumu Hirano was born and raised in a small coastal town called Murakami in the snowy region of Japan. His mother called him Ayumu because the literal meaning of this word is “walk the dream”. Hidenori is also a surfer who eventually opened a surf shop and burst into the limelight when he opened the skate park called Nihonkai Skate Park, which was available from scratch in his hometown of Murakami.

The father started the surf shop with the thought that one day his son would start to love the game and run the game professionally. However, Ayumu didn’t particularly like surfing. Instead, he developed his passion for skateboarding and followed in the footsteps of his older brother named Eiju who is almost 3 years older than him.

Ayumu made his international debut for the first time in March 2011. He won the Burton US Junior Open competition for the first time. Up to this age he followed his mentor Kazuhiro Kokubo. His older brother took part in the event and took seventh place.

In 2012, record breaker Ayumu Hirano was invited to Burton High Fives, an event then held in New Zealand where Ayumu won the gold medal at the age of 13. Later in 2013 he was invited to compete at the Winter X Games in Aspen, Colorado (the biggest non-Olympic snowboarding event).

There, Ayumu won a silver medal at the event, and at the time he was only 14 years old, finishing behind Shaun White.
