Barry Melrose is a Canadian-American broadcaster, former professional ice hockey player, and head coach. He has given his presence to the World Hockey Association (WHA) and the National Hockey League (NHL). After completing his playing career, he became the head coach and is famously known for being the coach of the Los Angeles Kings has made his team reach the Stanley Cup Finals.
In 1996, he joined ESPN as a commentator and also contributed his work as an NHL analyst. Barry Melrose was an ice hockey player, worked as a coach, and then worked for ESPN. Now, he has been diagnosed with a disease called Parkinson’s disease and has decided to retire from his long commentator career.
He said that he has given around 50 years to playing, coaching, and analyzing the games, but it is affecting his health. Also, he added that he is thankful to his wife and supportive family and is also grateful to his hockey career and 30-year-long ESPN home. He thanked everyone for the incredible memories.
Early Life
Barry Melrose was born on 15th July 1956 and was brought up in Kelvington, Saskatchewan. His parent’s name is Norrie and James Melrose and he grew up on a farm out of town. He has three cousins and all of them are working for the NHL, they are named Wendel Clark and Joe Kocur, and longtime minor league forward Kerry Clark.

Playing
Barry Melrose was only 18 years old when he began playing as a defenceman in the WCHL with the Kamloops Chiefs in 1974. There he stayed for two years and started the next season [1996 to 1997] with Springfield Indians of the AHL, then he moved to the Cincinnati Stingers of the WHA, where he played until 1979.
From 1979 – 1980, he joined the Winnipeg Jets. next, he started splitting his time between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Detroit Red Wings and their AHL affiliates. Then, he spent his next season 1986 – 1987 with the Adirondack Red Wings. During his entire NHL career, he played at least 300 games out of which he had 10 goals, 23 assists, and 728 penalty minutes.
Coaching
Barry Melrose began his coaching career in 1987 at the age of 31. First, he gave his coaching and assistance to the Medicine Hat Tigers of the WHL, leading them to make a record of 44–22–6 and a Memorial Cup title. He has given coaching to the Seattle Thunderbirds and then spent three years with the Adirondack Red Wings, leading them to win the Calder Cup from 1991 to 1992. Barry continued to coach the Kings for the next two seasons but with the losing records. He then spent nearly 13 years working as a hockey analyst for ESPN.
ESPN
Barry Melrose joined ESPN in 1996 and became a commentator and NHL analyst. In the middle of ESPN’s career, he left the commentator work in June 2008 and joined coaching. He gave coaching to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Then in January 2009, he returned to ESPN.
John Buccigross announced on Twitter that Barry Melrose will retire from the network on 10 October 2023. Barry decided to spend his future with family and also because he has been affected with a disease, Parkinson’s disease.
