Brad Brownell is an American personality and a basketball coach for the Clemson Tigers men’s team. Before having a coaching career at Clemson, he used to work for UNC Wilmington Seahawks (2002–2006) and Wright State Raiders (2006–2010).
Brad began working as a coach for Clemson Tigers in 2010. He is managing to coach the Clemson team for their 14th season and he is considered to be the winningest coach in school history.
Early Life, Education & Childhood
Brad Brownell was born in Evansville, Indiana, USA on 15th November 1968. He went to William Henry Harrison High School to complete his primary education. There, he played basketball with his companions, including Calbert Cheaney [current Indiana Pacers assistant of player development and Indiana University player]. Brad then went to DePauw University in 1991.
During that time, he also used to play basketball and was one of the members of the Sigma Chi fraternity. Immediately after completing his graduation, Brad Brownell went to provide coaching. In his junior year, Brad Brownell helped the Tigers reach the NCAA Division III National Championship game. However, the team could not win the championship as they missed a shot to win the title.
Brad then spent nearly a season as an assistant to Jim Crews at the University of Evansville. Afterward, he served as an assistant coach for the subsequent two seasons under his former mentor, Royce Waltman, at the University of Indianapolis. He used to assist the staff while earning his master’s degree. Brad completed his master’s degree in 1994.
Brad Brownell Career
Just after completing his master’s degree in 1994, Brad Brownell became an assistant at UNC Wilmington to then-head coach Jerry Wainwright. He spent his time guiding the UNC Wilmington Seahawks for their four postseason tournament berths. He served as an assistant, and during that time, in his presence, the team won over the fourth-seeded USC Trojans in the 2002 NCAA Tournament first round.
Clemson Tigers
Brad Brownell began his coaching career at Clemson, replacing already hired Oliver Purnell. After Oliver Purnell, he became the head coach of Clemson Tigers. He was handed over the responsibilities on 23rd April 2010. In his first year at the school, he led the team to appear in the NCAA Tournament. In Brad’s presence, the Tigers defeated UAB in the First Four rounds and later lost the second round while playing against West Virginia.
On 20th March 2017, the Clemson Tigers announced that Brad Brownell would be head coach for at least next year. In his presence, Brad led the team to their first 20-win season, from the 2017 to 2018 season and after 2013 – 2014. The Tigers were called Sweet 16 and reached the #5 seed in the NCAA Tournament [for the season 2017 to 2018]. The Tigers could not reach the title and lost the game against #1 seed Kansas.
On 19th July 2018, it was announced that Brownell and Clemson would be spending the next six years together. Brownell received a contract extension for $15 million. He will be maintaining his position as a head coach at Clemson until 2024. In the presence of Brownell, the Tigers received their first road victory at UNC after having at least 59 attempts. The two schools [Clemson Tigers and UNC] have been standing against each other since 1926 when the series first started.
