Casper Ruud is a Norwegian professional tennis player. He is the first Norwegian to win an ATP title and reach the finals of the ATP Tour Masters 1000. He has won eight 250s, seven of them on clay courts.
Early life
Casper Ruud was born on December 22, 1998 in Oslo, Norway to Christian Ruud and Lele Ruud. Ruud’s father was a former professional tennis player. He is the younger of two sisters.
Rafael Nadal was his tennis idol growing up in Snarya, Baerum. Casper studied Baerum and Wang Toppidrett at NTG Ungdomsskole for his future success, and it paid off. His family had no financial problems, so he was able to attend these two top colleges and improve his skills.
Casper Ruud career
Casper faced such challenges in the early stages of his career. Ruud lost to Corentin Denolly in the third round of the 2015 French Open singles tournament. He also reached the third round of the 2015 US Open boys’ singles and the second round of the 2015 Wimbledon boys’ singles, his best junior Grand Slam singles results.
On January 4, 2016, Ruud became the first Norwegian to become world no. 1 in the junior division. In February he competed in his first Futures final, which he won against Carlos Taberner in Paguera, Spain. Ruud fell to Reilly Opelka in the third and final qualifying round of the 2017 Australian Open after impressing and climbing the ATP rankings in 2016.
Rise to Fame
Ruud then received a wildcard to the 2017 Rio Open, where he defeated Rogério Dutra Silva, Roberto Carballés Baena and Thiago Monteiro to reach his first ATP semi-final.
Ruud fell in the first round of the Australian Open in 2019 but qualified for the 2019 Rio Open where he defeated Carlos Berlocq and Joo Sousa before losing to Laslo Ere in straight sets. As a result, he climbed to a career-high tie-high of 108.
Ruud led Norway to a 2-1 win over the United States in the first round-robin game of the 2020 ATP Cup, defeating John Isner in three close sets before doubling as he tied with Viktor Durasovic teamed up to beat Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram.
Ruud defeats world No. 12 Fabio Fognini in straight sets in the second round robin singles event. At the Australian Open 2021, Ruud became the first Dutchman to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam.
He defeated Jordan Thompson, Tommy Paul and Radu Albot before retiring after losing the first two sets to Andrey Rublev. Ruud competed at the 2022 Argentina Open where he won his seventh career ATP singles title by defeating Diego Schwartzman in the final.
