Charly Arnolt is an American sports host and television personality currently working for the multimedia platform OutKick. From 2016 to 2021, she was a sports host and ring announcer for WWE, where she used the ring name Charly Caruso. In addition, she worked as a backup anchor and presenter on ESPN’s First Take alongside Stephen A. Smith and Molly Qerim. However, in April 2023, she left ESPN to join OutKick, a sports, news, and politics platform founded by Clay Travis.
Early life
Arnolt was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. Her ancestry is Italian-American. During her childhood, Arnolt developed a love for sports and began playing softball, volleyball, and gymnastics. Despite her ambitions to become a gymnast and to take part in the Olympic Games, she had to give up the sport due to an injury.
Likewise, her dreams of playing volleyball at the college level were thwarted due to her size. Arnolt graduated summa cum laude with a degree in broadcast journalism from American University in 2010. She previously attended North Central High School.
Charly Arnolt career
She began her journalism career in 2010, becoming a reporter at WSAZ-TV based in Huntington, West Virginia. Arnolt then moved to Indianapolis, where she worked as a freelance reporter for WXIN “Fox 59”. She then moved to Kansas City, Missouri, and joined WDAF-TV “Fox 4” in 2011.
She spent nearly two years there before returning to WXIN in 2014 as a presenter and sports reporter. In 2016, Arnolt attended a WWE SmackDown show in Indianapolis as a guest of her boyfriend Tony Khan, who co-owns All Elite Wrestling and also works for the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars.
During the event, she met Mark Carrano, WWE’s Senior Director of Talent Relations, who introduced her to Michael Cole. Cole is responsible for hiring television stations and ring announcers for the company, and became interested in Arnolt’s talent. Unfortunately, there were no vacancies at that time.
WWE
However, when Brandi Rhodes left WWE in May 2016, Arnolt saw an opportunity to join the company. She began working as a ring announcer for WWE NXT under the name Charly Caruso and quickly rose to the main roster.
She has interviewed WWE Superstars and hosted events on various platforms, including USA Network, WWE YouTube, WWE Social Media, and WWE Network. Arnolt also hosted pre-show panels and conducted backstage interviews on Monday Night RAW and WWE NXT until 2021, when she decided not to renew her contract with WWE.
ESPN
In September 2018, Charly became part of ESPN and began posting updates on SportsCenter. She also hosted the SportsCenter show on Snapchat. A few months later, someone in the talent department asked her what she would most like to do at the network.
As a result, she made a positive impression in late December 2018 and was given more opportunities to host First Take, eventually becoming the main presenter. Charly was also a member of the First Take, Her Take podcast on ESPN alongside Kimberley Martin and Elle Duncan.
The weekly show had the same format as the television show and allowed them to discuss various topics related to their life and culture. Aside from those roles, Charly has made frequent appearances on SportsNation on ESPN+ and other shows on the streaming service.
However, it was a challenge for her to ensure there were no scheduling conflicts between her WWE and ESPN commitments. Eventually, she made the full transition from WWE to ESPN. On July 9, 2022, Arnolt made her first appearance as a fight interviewer at UFC on ESPN: dos Anjos vs. Fiziev.
Arnolt left ESPN in April 2023 and became part of OutKick, a multimedia sports, news, and politics platform founded by Clay Travis. Noting that OutKick allows her to express herself freely without fear of the abandonment culture, she stated, “There is no abandonment culture here.”
