Craig Melvin is an American personality and a well-known broadcast journalist and presenter on NBC News Channel and also on MSNBC. Before turning to permanent employment in January 2019, he announced that he would be taking his position as news anchor on NBC’s Today, and in October of that year, he announced that he would be co-host of Today’s Third Hour.
Early life
Craig Melvin was born on May 20, 1979, and turned 43 in 2022. He grew up in Columbia, South Carolin, where he was raised his entire life by his loving and caring parents, named Lawrence and Betty Melvin. He grew up with two brothers — a younger named Ryan Melvin and an older half-brother named Rev. Lawrence Meadows, who died of colon cancer in 2020 at the age of 43.
In 1996, Craig was the first African American personality to be elected President of Key Club International. He attended Wofford College, where he received his bachelor’s degree in art, and then worked as a senior counselor for the Palmetto Boys State Program in South Carolina.

Craig began his professional life in 1995 when he was first hired by WIS-TV, an NBC affiliate based in Columbia, South Carolina, where he joined the network as a high school student and served as Our Generation Reporter from 1995 to 2016 worked in 1997. After completing his college education, Craig returned to WIS-TV in July 2001 and began working as a news photographer and producer. He was later hired as a reporter for the station’s morning news team. During this time, he produced live coverage of Craig Cam. While in the same position, i.e., at WIS-TV, he was promoted to news anchor and got the job of weekend morning news show and weekend evening news show, and eventually progressed to weekday news show.
While working at WIS-TV, Craig was given the opportunity to work on several series covering important issues affecting education and the homeless in Colombia, as well as many other major headline or news-related topics. He left WIS in July 2008 and joined NBC, based in Washington, DC, where he began hosting evening news programs on weekends. After three years, he began working for MSNBC at WRC-TV in July 2011 and was promoted to the position of daytime presenter while also working as a reporter for NBC News. From 2012 to 2016, Craig worked with many media outlets, including covering national conventions for MSNBC and as a presenter for them, covering the nightly news for TV One while working with NBC News.
Rise to Fame
He was among the talented reporters covering the Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics for NBC in August 2016, and he hosted MSNBC Live that same year. In 2017, he hosted his true crime show titled Dateline: Secrets Uncovered, which premiered on Oxygen on July 21 of the same year. In 2018, Craig began working out of PyeongChang County to cover NBC’s coverage of the February Winter Olympics. After reporting, he was promoted to host the Today show in September of the same year. He also hosted the Today Third Hour show in October. In March 2022, Craig announced that he was leaving his MSNBC shows to fully focus on his reporting on another show called Today for NBC News.
