Early life

Darcy Kuemper was born on May 5, 1990 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to Brent Kuemper, a police officer, and an accountant Sharon Kuemper. Kuemper started ice skating at the age of three in Saskatoon, which has a large hockey community.

Kuemper was drafted 45th overall by the Spokane Chiefs in the 2005 Western Hockey League (WHL) Bantam Draft.

He had just 19 seconds of scoring time with Spokane when he relieved starting goaltender Dustin Tokarski at the end of a period during the 2007 WHL playoffs, despite spending most of his contract time as a WHL prospect in Saskatoon. Kuemper was traded to the Red Deer Rebels on December 13, 2007 in exchange for a conditional pick in the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft.

On February 12, 2013, Kuemper was recalled from the Wild. The Wild called on Kuemper to start the following night after backup goalkeeper Josh Harding became unwell as a result of complications from multiple sclerosis therapy. On February 17, Kuemper earned his first career NHL win against the Detroit Red Wings, making 29 saves on 31 shots. Kuemper signed a one-year, $650,000 contract with the Los Angeles Kings on July 1, 2017. Kuemper excelled in the Kings’ backup role last season, winning 10 games in 19 appearances.

Darcy was traded to the Arizona Coyotes on February 21, 2018 for goalie Scott Wedgewood and winger Tobias Rieder. The Coyotes immediately re-signed Kuemper to a two-year, $3.7 million contract extension. Kuemper was dealt with the Colorado Avalanche for a first-round pick in 2022, a conditional third-round pick in 2024 and defenseman Conor Timmins on July 28, 2021. During Saturday’s Game 3 triumph against Nashville, Kuemper was hit near the eye by a stick.
