Early life
Victor and Phyllis E. Grann welcomed David into the world on March 10, 1967. His mother was the first woman to head a major publishing company, having previously served as CEO of Putnam Penguin. The director of the Bennett Cancer Center in Stamford, Connecticut is his father, an oncologist.
Grann has two siblings, Edward and Alison. Grann earned a BA in Government Science from Connecticut College in 1989. David began his career as a freelance writer while still a student. He did research there thanks to a Thomas J. Watson grant. He also has a master’s degree in international affairs from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, which he earned in 1993.
