Gerardo Reyes is a Mexican professional baseball substitute for the Los Angeles Angels of Major League Baseball (MLB). Before Angels, he played for the San Diego Padres and has played that game since he was a child.
Early life
Gerardo Reyes is a popular baseball player who was born on May 13, 1993, in Mexico. Reyes attended high school in Hidalgo, Texas. His alma mater was Galveston College in Galveston, Texas. He played four games as a freshman in 2013 but was injured and unable to return in his sophomore year.
Gerardo Reyes career
Reyes was signed by the Tampa Bay Rays as an undrafted free agent on August 11, 2013, after a tryout. In 2014, he made his pro debut with the Hudson Valley Renegades of the Low-New York-Penn League. He compiled a 2-1 win-loss record with a 4.08 earned run average (ERA) in 33 innings played.
San Diego Padres
Reyes was traded to the San Diego Padres in December 2014 as part of a three-team swap between Tampa Bay, San Diego, and the Washington Nationals that also included Wil Myers, Tre Turner, and Steven Souza. After sitting out 2015, he pitched for both the Fort Wayne TinCaps of the Class A Midwest League and the Lake Elsinore Storm of the Class A-Advanced California League in 2016, posting a combined 4-5 record with a 3.59 earned run average over 52.3 innings.
He returned to Lake Elsinore in 2017 and went 3-3 with a 2.63 ERA in 613 innings. He spent the 2018 season between Lake Elsinore and the San Antonio Missions of the Double-A Texas League, going 1-3 with a 2.77 ERA in 55 innings. After the 2018 season, he was included in the Padres’ 40-man squad.
His 2019 season began with the Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas of the Pacific Coast League, where he won 4-2 with an earned run average of 3.57 over 45 and a third inning. He made his major league debut on April 12, 2019. In his first professional pitching appearance, he pitched 2.3 innings and picked up a win. Reyes was 4-0 for the Padres in 2019 with a 7.62 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 26 innings.
Los Angeles Angels
Reyes was traded to the Los Angeles Angels on August 30, 2020, in exchange for Jason Castro. He did not compete for the Angels due to the cancellation of the minor league season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Reyes was dropped from the 40-man roster by a full layoff on March 5, 2021. Due to a strain in the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow, Reyes underwent surgery with Tommy John and missed the 2021 season.
Reyes was sent to the Triple-A Salt Lake Bees after returning from injury in 2022. With a 3-4 record, a 3.74 ERA, 58 strikeouts and 6 saves in 45.2 innings, he made 46 appearances all season.
On August 26, 2022, Reyes was selected for the 40-man roster and was inducted into the active roster. To prevent the spread of COVID-19, the Toronto Blue Jays have restricted the travel of Taylor Ward, Aaron Loup, and Ryan Tepera. Reyes allowed a three-hit, three-walk run throughout two innings that spanned two reliefs.
On August 29, he was demoted to Triple-A after being dropped from the 40-man roster. At the end of the season, on November 10, he decided to go free agency. Reyes re-signed a minor league contract with the Angels on December 31, 2022. In 19 appearances for Triple-A Salt Lake in 2023, he had a 4.64 ERA with 32 strikeouts in 2,113 innings. After Ben Joyce was placed on the disabled list due to an injury on June 10, 2023, Reyes was called up to the major leagues.
