Gino Mader, a Swiss cyclist who competed primarily in road and track racing, died on June 16, 2023. He was a member of the UCI World Team Bahrain Victorious until his last ride. An unfortunate accident during the 2023 Tour de Suisse took Mäder’s life.

Early life
Gino was born in Switzerland on January 4th, 1997 and grew up in a family deeply rooted in the world of cycling. His father, Urs Mäder, can look back on an impressive career as a former professional cyclist and competed in the prestigious 1984 Summer Olympics road race.

Gino Mader career
Mäder was among a breakaway that nearly won stage seven of the 2021 Paris-Nice race. But Primo Rogli passed him in the last 50 meters and took the win. He won the daily prize for his performance. Later in 2021, Mäder competed in the Vuelta a Espana. After losing three minutes in the first eight stages, he started to ride strong on stage 9, finishing sixth on the mountainous climb to the Alto de Velefique.
His impressive performance as Jack Haig’s domestique continued for the rest of the race. During stage 17, which ended on Lagos de Covadossnga, Mäder ended up in the elite group, 1.5 minutes behind leader Primo Rogli. Thanks to this performance, he now ranks in the top 10 of the GC.
The next day on the queen stage of the race to Altu d’El Gamoniteiru [es]Haig and Mäder finished sixth and seventh respectively, more than a minute behind, while Mäder moved up to eighth place overall. On the penultimate stage of the race, a group of five men including Mäder and Haig escaped the general classification group on the third to last hill. This group also included Rogli, Enric Mas and Adam Yates.
Maintaining their lead over the competition, the group saw Mäder finish in the top five overall and this move saw Haig climb to third place overall. In the young riders category, Mäder passed Egan Bernal and took the lead. He finished the Vuelta in fifth place overall and won the young riders’ classification by maintaining his position in the final day’s time trial.

Accident and death
On the fifth stage of the Tour de Suisse on June 15, 2023, Mäder collapsed in a bend while descending from the highest point of the stage at the Albula Pass. It had only been a few minutes since American rider Magnus Sheffield had crashed in practically the same area. It was later revealed that Mäder was unconscious and was swimming face down in the water. He was revived and transported to a hospital in Chur. Unfortunately, Mäder died of his wounds the next day.
