Jay Johnson is the head baseball coach for the LSU Tigers, having previously played college baseball and coached at Point Loma Nazarene, Nevada, and Arizona. Jay Johnson was hired by Louisiana State University to replace Paul Mainieri.
In his debut season, Johnson led the Wildcats to a 49-24 record and reached the final game of the College World Series before losing to Coastal Carolina. He also led Arizona back to Omaha last season but lost in two games. Despite this, he was named Pac-12 Coach of the Year and will now lead LSU.
Johnson has a 316-172 head coaching record and a 17-7 postseason record. However, the Wildcats struggled in the two seasons prior to the canceled 2020 college baseball season, finishing 66-46 and missing the postseason both years.
Early life
Jack Johnson was born on April 20, 1977, grew up in Oroville, California, and loved to play baseball. He played for his high school’s varsity team and was a talented player. After graduating in 1995, he went to Shasta College to pursue baseball. Johnson honed his talents as a second baseman and became a key player for Shasta’s baseball team, known for his strong batting average and fielding skills for over two years.
Jay transferred from Shasta College to Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego County to complete his college education. Johnson was a standout second baseman for PLNU’s Sea Lions baseball team during his senior year in 2000.

Johnson began his coaching career in 2001 as an assistant coach at Point Loma Nazarene while also completing his bachelor’s degree. He later became head coach and led the team to the division championship and 6th place in the NAIA national rankings. In 2005, Johnson joined the University of San Diego as an assistant coach.
During his time there, the team won three West Coast Conference championships and competed in four NCAA Division I baseball championships with Johnson on staff. In 2013, he became the head coach of the Nevada Wolf Pack basketball team.
Johnson led the Wildcats to their seventh College World Series appearance in 2016, but they lost to Coastal Carolina in the championship series. During his two-year tenure, he led the team to a record of 72-42, and in 2015 they won their first Mountain West title with a record of 22-7.
The team has been in the top 25 for most of that season, and Johnson was named Mountain West Coach of the Year. Johnson left Arizona and has been the head coach of the LSU Tigers since June 24, 2021.
