Joe Alwyn also known as William Bowery or Joseph Matthew Alwyn is an English actor. Joe is not that well known in the industry for his acting but received a lot of media coverage for being the boyfriend of Taylor Swift, one of the most charming and talented American singers.
Early life
Joe Alwyn was born on February 21, 1991 in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England. He comes from an educated and respected family where his mother is a psychotherapist and his father is a documentary filmmaker. Although a member of the Working People family, he is the great-grandson of William Alwyn, the composer of his day.
Joe Alwyn was educated in City of London School and briefly took guitar lessons at his school at the age of 13. He gained practice in football and rugby while at school and although an introverted personality, he secretly wanted to be an actor since childhood. This got him enrolled in the National Youth Theater in his late teens.
While continuing his education in English literature at the University of Bristol, he appeared in two student productions at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Joe finished his degree in 2012 and later applied to four drama schools but he was rejected from all institutes except the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama where he received his BA in Acting.
While pursuing his acting classes, Joe was signed by an agent who informed him that the company was looking for actors. In the process, Joe landed a debut role as the title character of Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk (2016).

He began his acting career with two student productions at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe while also receiving his BA in English Literature from the University of Bristol in 2012 and later studying drama and acting at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in 2015.
Joe began his debut with the 2016 film Long Halftime Walk, which was based on wartime. Since then Joe has worked in many films with minor supporting roles with top films such as The Favorite (2018), Boy Erased (2018), Mary Queen of Scots (2018) and Harriet (2019). He received the Chopard Trophy at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival for his hard work and skill in the acting industry.
In 2020, Joe transitioned into a writer and producer, sharing titles with Talor Swift for the production of songs such as “Exile,” “My Tears Ricochet,” “August,” and “Betty.” The pair worked on various collaborations while co-writing and producing various tracks such as “Champagne Problems”, “Coney Island” and “Evermore”.
Joe also contributed to the album Folklore, which he shared with longtime partner Taylor Swift, for which he also received a Grammy Award for Album of the Year at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2021.
