Kamila Valeryevna Valieva is a Russian figure skater known for having represented her country at various international competitions and ISUs as both a junior and senior figure skater. She is a member of the Sambo 70 Club and has immense experience in the sport for over a decade.
Early life
Kamila Valieva was born on April 26, 2006 in Kazan, Russian to her parents whose names have not been released. She grew up as an only child in her hometown and is of Tatar descent. She started figure skating at the age of 5 and trained in gymnastics, ballet and figure skating. Kamila hasn’t revealed much about her education and studies, but is said to have completed her high school diploma. She also announced that she wants to be a psychologist and is studying in the same field.
Kamila Valieva’s career
Kamila started figure skating in her hometown in 2009 and later moved to Moscow where she joined SSHOR Moskvich. She trained there for almost a decade and was inducted into the Sambo 70 group in 2018. In 2018 she attracted worldwide attention for her short program Spiegel im Spiegel inspired by Picasso’s painting and also won the Russian Youth Championship. In 2019 she made her international debut at the Junior Grand Prix competition in France, placing 3rd in the short program. She also won gold at the same event.
She was the second skater to land a quadruple toe loop in competition. In the same season, she competed in JGP Russia 2020 and placed 1st in both programs while also setting personal bests. She also qualified for the final of the 2019-20 Junior Grand Prix in Italy where she placed 4th in the short program. She also competed in the 2020 Russian Junior Championship and again took 1st place. Kamila was soon selected to the 2020 World Junior Championships team and placed 1st in the short program with a personal best score.
In 2020-21 she made her debut at the Russian Championships and placed 2nd in the free skate. She also participated in Channel One 2021 trophy promotion at CS Finlandia Trophy 2021. She also made her Senior Grand Prix debut at Skate Canada International 2021 that same year, setting a new world record for women’s free skating with a score of 265.08.
She later qualified for the Grand Prix final which was canceled due to Omicron proliferation. She also recently made her debut at the European Championships in Estonia this season and improved her world record by becoming the first woman to break 90 points. She is currently ranked 5th in the world.
