Mariah Lopez is a Centennial High School softball player and currently plays for the Utah Utes softball team in the NCAA. During a stellar freshman season, Lopez racked up several key wins and played in many crucial situations, posting five wins and leading the team with 66 strikeouts. She made 18 starts in 30 total appearances for a 5-13 record, a 5.12 ERA, and two full games.
On February 21, she threw a full game at UNLV, conceding just four hits and one walk, while beating 11 batters in the process, including the final three she faced late in the game. That was the most strikeouts by a Utah pitcher since 2012 when Generra Nielson had 12 strikeouts against Utah Valley (5/8/12). Mariah pitched 94.1 innings and conceded 110 hits while earning her first career win. On May 1, she pitched 6.2 innings, knocking out seven batsmen and allowing just four hits.
In 2022, the Southpaw was a regular starter in the rotation during her sophomore season, posting an 8-5 record in 18 starts and 25 total appearances. Throughout the season, she posted an impressive 3.08 earned run average (ERA) and racked up 80 strikeouts in 91 pitched innings. Her exceptional performance on the mound limited opposing hitters to a .247 batting average, the team’s best.
Lopez pitched five full games and tied with teammate Halle Morris in a run-rule shutout against UC Riverside (2/25), the sixth of the season for the team. Against Kansas, she put on a solid performance (3/5), throwing 5.1 innings, giving up four hits, and two runs, and beating nine batters, the best season of the season, to earn her fourth win of the year. Mariah threw a fantastic away game against #3 UCLA (4/30) that lasted six innings and conceded just four hits and two runs while knocking out seven Bruins.
