Naomi Osaka is a professional tennis player representing Japan. She has been raised in the States since she was three years old. Osaka has been ranked number one by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).
She is the holder of the Australian Open in 2019, Wimbledon in 2018 and 2017, and the US Open in 2018. She is the first Japanese woman to win the tennis Grand Slam title.
Early life
Osaka was born on October 16, 1997, to parents Leonard Maxime Francois and Tamaki Osaka in Chuo-ku, Osaka, Japan. She has an older sister, Mari Osaka, who is also a professional tennis player. She is of mixed culture as her father is from Haiti while her mother is from Japan. When Naomi was three years old, her family moved to New York and later settled in Florida, from where she graduated from Broward Virtual High School. Both Osaka sisters started playing tennis together at a young age as their father was inspired by watching Richard Williams train his daughters. The sisters became close on the courts and it took 12 years for Osaka to defeat Mari.

Despite losing to Caroline Wozniacki in the 2016 WTA finals, Osaka made her mark at the age of 18. In the same year, she made it into the top 50 of the WTA rankings and at the end of the season she was named WTA Newcomer of the Year. In 2017 there was a regression in her growth, she made a strong debut at Wimbledon where she defeated Barbora Strycova before losing to Venus Williams. She took the spotlight after beating number six Angelique Kerber but soon lost for the second straight US Open third round. In 2018, she finished fifth after a huge improvement in her first top ten seasons.
Her biggest achievement of her career came when she defeated her idol player Serena Williams and won her first Grand Slam. She was the first Japanese to make it at this level. She trained under Sascha Bajin and won the Australian Open in 2019, for which she had to defeat Petra Kvitova. This was the highest point in her career when she secured the position of world number one. Coached by Wim Fissette, she has five singles titles and a total prize money of $14,770,234 (as of 2020). She just stunned the world and added another milestone to her name by defeating former WTA player Serena Williams on February 18, 2021. Naomi will face off against the second semi-finalist of the Australian Open final, which will take place on February 20, 2021.
