After graduating from Fayette High School, Murphy earned a bachelor’s degree in history education from the University of Northern Iowa in 1988. While attending Northern Iowa University, Murphy coached Little League Baseball. After graduating from college, Murphy was hired as the head coach of the Sumner High School varsity baseball team in Sumner, Iowa. In its first season there in 1989, the team recorded a 22-3 record and won the 1990 state championship.

Murphy spent a year in 1995 as the interim head softball coach at Northwest Missouri State’s Division II before moving up to the Division I collegiate level as an assistant coach at Alabama from 1996 to 1998.

Under his leadership, Alabama won the 2012 national championship and earned an impressive 12 spots in the Women’s College World Series. In addition, the team has won six SEC regular-season titles and four SEC tournament titles and has an incredible streak of 21 consecutive NCAA tournament bids.
