Riley Cooper is a relief pitcher for the LSU Tigers who is slowly but steadily developing his baseball career. He played for Clovis North High School. He threw 12.2 innings, allowed 2 runs in 7 hits, and had 12 strikeouts. Not bad for a player who called Paul Skenes a “funky lefty” and who has nothing remotely close to an overpowered arsenal.
He was named to the 2019 Perfect Game Preseason Underclass All-America team. He was named to the all-conference team every four years and to the all-state team twice in his last three years. Riley also competed in the 2018 and 2019 Area Code Games.
Early life
Riley Cooper was born on October 19, 2001, in Arcata, California but grew up in Fresno, California. During his junior and senior years of high school, he attended Clovis North High School in Fresno, California. He played baseball for head coach Jeff Prieto for four years and earned letters. In his freshman year in Arizona, Riley set a school record with 29 appearances and two starts. He had a record 3.0, 4.88 ERA, and 18 innings scoreless in 27 bullpen appearances. His 34 inherited baserunners were the most at the club, yet he gave up just 7 runs or 20.6%.
Riley Cooper knocked out 20 batters and kept his opponents at a .234 average while taking on multiple runners on eight separate occasions. In three playoff games, he maintained a perfect 1-0 record with a .00 earned run average and threw two scoreless frames against Grand Canyon in the Tucson NCAA Regional.
Riley threw 2.1 scoreless innings in Game 3 of the Tucson NCAA Super Regional over Ole Miss, and in the College World Series opener for the Wildcats’ game against Vanderbilt, he pitched an inning without conceding a run.
Rise to Fame
Riley made 30 appearances with a 2022 start, leading the team and finishing with a 4-3 record, 4.20 ERA, eight walks, and 35 strikeouts in 40.2 innings. He played in 30 games, finished fourth in the SEC, and started in all three games of the regular season series against Texas A&M, Mississippi State, and Missouri.
His strong showing came as a relief at Vanderbilt when Riley conceded six hits and one run while hitting four strikeouts and not letting a batter run. In the first game of the series against Alabama, he pitched 1.2 innings and secured the win despite allowing three singles.
During LSU’s three-game win over Missouri, Riley came on in all three games, allowing just two hits, no runs, and knocking out two batters in 2.2 scoreless innings while earning the win and the save. In two appearances during the Arkansas Series, he knocked out six batters while conceding just two earned runs. He appeared in all three games of the Mississippi State Series and threw 40 pitches over three innings with a 1-0 record, 0.00 ERA, and a walk with no strikeouts.
Riley allowed just one hit in 1.2 scoreless innings while he had three against Auburn. On March 20 against Texas A&M, he threw 1.2 innings for relief and picked up his first win for LSU. In the Tigers’ 7-6 win over the Aggies, he allowed just one shot, let no one run, and knocked out a batter. Riley also made three appearances in the series against Texas A&M, throwing for 3.1 innings and posting a deserved run with two hits, two walks, and two strikeouts.
