Sam Purcell was born on October 5, 1979, in Dalton, Georgia, United States only. Only there he spent his childhood. His father’s name is Bill Allen and his mother’s name is not shared on the internet. He attended Southeast Whitfield High School and received his bachelor’s degree from Auburn University, Montgomery.

When he finished his studies, he decided to become a coach. He began his career as a student coach at Auburn from 2000 to 2003. Sam Purcell then became Auburn’s video coordinator, administrative assistant, from 2003 to 2005. He was Tulsa’s assistant coach from 2005 to 2007. After that, he joined Georgia Tech from 2007 to 2009 as a video coordinator. And then he joined Georgia Tech as an assistant coach from 2009 to 2013. He then became an assistant coach at Louisville from 2013 to 2017. He very well played a pivotal role in guiding Louisville to a program-best 36-3 record in 2017-18. In 2022, he became Mississippi State’s head coach.
His fabulous time at Louisville began in 2013 and during his tenure, 10 players were selected for the WNBA draft, including 6 between 2019 and 2021. Before Louisville, he spent 6 seasons at Georgia Tech and his other stints included Tulsa and Auburn. Overall, he’s spent the last 19 or so years climbing the ranks from student coach at Auburn to associate coach at Louisville, one of the top programs in the country. During his journey, the Dalton, Georgia native has worked under some of women’s basketball’s biggest minds, including Jeff Walz, the current head coach of Louisville.
