Sterling Sharpe is a retired wide receiver of American football who gained fame because of his strong but short but strong career with the Green Bay Packers of the National Football League (NFL). Considered to be one of the most prolific receivers of his time, Sharpe was a five-time Pro Bowl and three-time first-team All-Pro.

His career was ended prematurely after he sustained a neck injury, but his contributions to the game could not be ignored as he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2025. He was the first of two siblings, and together with his younger brother, Shannon Sharpe, they became the first brother twosome to be so honored.

Early Life
Sterling Sharpe was born April 6, 1965, in Chicago, Illinois, and later grew up in Glennville, Georgia. Sterling was raised by his grandmother and came up in a simple home alongside his siblings, among them future Hall of Fame tight end Shannon Sharpe. He was an exceptional athlete in high school at Glennville High School, playing football, basketball, and track.
He was awarded a scholarship to the University of South Carolina, where he is one of the most-decorated wide receivers in school history. Between 1983 and 1987, he broke school records in receptions, yards, and touchdowns. During his college career, his jersey number 2 was retired, which is a great distinction. In 2014, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
Sterling Sharpe Career
Sterling Sharpe became the seventh overall pick in the 1988 NFL Draft. He joined a struggling Green Bay Packers team at the time. Even though he retired before they won the Super Bowl, Sharpe played a major role in helping turn the team around.
As a rookie, Sharpe had a solid year with 791 receiving yards. In 1989, he took his game to the next level. He led the league with 90 receptions and scored 12 touchdowns. That season earned him his first trip to the Pro Bowl and his first All-Pro honor. Over his career, he made five Pro Bowls and three All-Pro teams.
Sharpe’s career changed even more in 1992 when the Packers brought in quarterback Brett Favre. Early that season, Favre became the starter and quickly built strong chemistry with Sharpe. He often threw to Sharpe, who wore No. 84, as his go-to target.
In 1992, Sharpe led the league in catches, yards, and touchdowns. He became just the sixth player ever to win the receiving triple crown. That year, he had 108 catches for 1,461 yards and 13 scores. Those 108 receptions set a new NFL record, which Sharpe broke the next year with 112 catches.
In his final season in 1994, he again led the league—this time with 18 touchdown catches. Most fans know Jerry Rice as the top wide receiver of that time. Still, Sharpe wasn’t far behind. He led the league in receptions three times, yards once, and touchdowns twice. He was one of the most dominant receivers of his era.
Sharpe only appeared in two playoff games, but he made them count. He finished with 229 receiving yards and four touchdowns. His first playoff game remains a career highlight. At the end of the 1993 season, the Packers faced the Detroit Lions in a wild-card game.
Sterling Sharpe caught three touchdowns, including a game-winner in the final minute. Favre found him deep for a 40-yard score, giving Green Bay its second playoff win since 1967. Sterling Sharpe’s career was short, but he left a huge impact on the game and helped spark the Packers’ rise in the 1990s.
