When the show American Ninja Warrior started in 2009, it required contestants between 13 to 14 years of age. Vance participated in the inaugural season of the Ninja Show and qualified for episode 11. Standing in the seeding round, he faced Christian Youst, whom he beat by 0.2 seconds. Then he met a knockout competition, where he defeated Leah Wickert and advanced to the showdown.
He later had the rematch with Christian Youst and won the match, after which he got an entry card for the semifinals. Then in the semifinals, he faced another challenger, Max Feinberg. He reached the top 8 finalists and faced Hudson Humphries, whom he beat and advanced to the finals round.
Then he went to the final round, where he faced Jonathan Godbout. Vance defeated Jonathan and became the new champion. Then came the finishing course round, where he completed the course with the fastest time and beat Nate Pardo. Vance became the first person between the age of 13-14 to win American Ninja Warrior and thereby win $15,000.

Vance returned to the show in the seventh qualifying round. Last season, he could not perform well and tagged himself as Mr Imperfect. This time, he returned to the show with the motive of being called Mr. Perfect.
In the lasso Launch round, he [though] hit the knee of the Pole Vault and was one of the two competitors to complete the round; he completed the course and was placed in the first position. He then returned to the third round of the show in the semifinals, where he raced against Erick Zamorano, who fell on the slingshot, and Vance completed the course with the fastest time.
Though Vance was behind, he quickly earned the safety pass, reached stage one, got revenge on the jumping spider, had several spins on “The Gambler” round, and then recovered and finished stage one within 18 seconds remaining.
