Wally Adeyemo is a Nigerian-American economic and political consultant. He was the first President of the Obama Foundation and is President Joe Biden’s nominee for Deputy Secretary of the Treasury. Adeyemo was Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economics and Deputy Director of the National Economic Council during the Obama administration.
Early life
Adewale “Wally” Adeyemo was born on May 20, 1981, in Ibadan, Nigeria. He grew up in Southern California and was the son of Yoruba parents. His father was a teacher and his mother worked as a nurse. He has two younger siblings.
After graduating from Eisenhower High School in Rialto, California in 1999, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 2004 and a Juris Doctorate from Yale Law School in 2009.
Wally Adeyemo career
For John Kerry’s 2004 presidential campaign, Wally Adeyemo served as the director of African American outreach in the San Francisco office. Before joining the Obama administration, he was an editor at the Hamilton Project. Adeyemo later served as senior adviser and deputy chief of staff to Jack Lew at the US Treasury Department.
He was also the first Chief of Staff of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau under Elizabeth Warren. Adeyemo was proposed for the position of Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for International Markets and Development, while Marisa Lago, the current Assistant Secretary, was proposed for the position of Assistant US Trade Representative in November 2014.
Wally Adeyemo was the President’s delegate to the G7 and G20 summits and has held many senior positions in the Treasury Department, including senior adviser and deputy chief of staff, as well as chief negotiator for the macroeconomic policy elements of the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
Rise to Fame
After serving as the company’s interim chief of staff to Laurence D. Fink, the CEO, for two years beginning in 2017, he served as a senior advisor at BlackRock. Adeyemo was elected the first President of the Obama Foundation on August 1, 2019.
Adeyemo was declared a candidate for Deputy Secretary of the Treasury in the Biden administration in November 2020. His nomination was submitted to the Senate for approval on January 20, 2021. A hearing was held before the Senate Finance Committee on February 23, 2021.
Adeyemo received a vote to have him removed from the committee on March 3, 2021. On March 25, 2021, the Senate also confirmed him. He was sworn in by Secretary of State Janet Yellen on March 26, 2021. Deputy Foreign Minister Adeyemo was instrumental in enforcing the sanctions in 2022, visiting and communicating with foreign regulators to encourage compliance.
