Adewale “Wally” Adeyemo was born on May 20, 1981, in Ibadan, Nigeria. He grew up in Southern California and was the son of Yoruba parents. His father was a teacher and his mother worked as a nurse. He has two younger siblings.

After graduating from Eisenhower High School in Rialto, California in 1999, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 2004 and a Juris Doctorate from Yale Law School in 2009.

For John Kerry’s 2004 presidential campaign, Wally Adeyemo served as the director of African American outreach in the San Francisco office. He was also the first Chief of Staff of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau under Elizabeth Warren.
