Nationality Question

Dual citizenship is not recognized under Chinese law. The law allows minors of Chinese descent under the age of 18 to apply for Chinese citizenship through a parent or guardian, with the proviso that they could lose their foreign citizenship if their application is approved. The US does not allow citizens under the age of 16 to relinquish their citizenship, and there are additional safeguards in place for those under the age of 18. Minors under the age of 18 who refuse citizenship can regain their citizenship for 6 months after they turn 18.

As a result, from a Chinese perspective, Gu can exclusively hold Chinese citizenship, while from an external perspective, he holds dual citizenship. Gu has faced backlash on social media for her decision to transfer national representation and for allegedly not renouncing her American citizenship, as required by China’s nationality law.
