Before attending LSU, he was named to the 2018 Rawlings All-America team and to the 2018 Houma Christian High School first-team All-State roster. In his senior year, he batted .452 with 33 hits, 34 RBI, 10 home runs, and 46 runs. He attended Houma Christian High School, where he graduated with honors, was a four-time all-district pick, two-time district MVP, and was a member of the National Honor Society.
He competed in the Prospect League, an amateur summer varsity baseball league for varsity players, with the Danville (Ill.) Dans in 2018 and hit .331 with six doubles, two triples, three homers, 23 RBI, 28 runs, and 28 stolen bases.

Gavin tied the game 7-7 with a lone home run at the bottom of the eighth inning of the NCAA Hattiesburg Regional Final game against Southern Miss. In the game against Ole Miss on May 15, he suffered another thumb injury. Dugas missed the May 19-21 Vanderbilt series, but after his recovery, he started at DH for three games in the SEC tournament. He hit a home run early in the game against Southeast Louisiana, his first since March 29 against UL Monroe.
