Halyna Hutchins was a Los Angeles-based professional cinematographer who enjoyed playing with light and telling impressionistic stories. Darlin (2019), Archenemy (2020) and Blindfire are among her most famous projects (2020). Hutchins previously worked in Europe as a journalist covering British documentaries. Early life

Halyna Hutchins was born in Ukraine in 1979 and has not shared any information about her parents or any other details with the public as she doesn’t like it. Hutchins was born and raised in the Arctic Circle on a Soviet military outpost. She studied international journalism at Kyiv National University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree.

In her first career she worked as an investigative journalist for British documentary film productions in Eastern Europe. Inspired by cinematographers like Christopher Doyle and Sergey Urusevskiy, she decided to focus on filmmaking and relocated to Los Angeles, where she first worked various jobs as a production assistant and as a grip electrician while also making short films. At the recommendation of Emmy-winning cinematographer Robert Primes, she entered the American Film Institute Conservatory, the institute’s filmmaking MFA program, in 2013 and graduated two years later.

Her final project Hidden, in collaboration with her classmate Farzad Ostovarzadeh, was screened at Camerimage, the European film festival. In 2018, she was one of eight cinematographers selected for the inaugural 21st Century Fox DP Lab, and a year later she was selected as one of American Cinematographer Magazine’s Rising Stars.

She co-directed the indie superhero mystery film Archenemy with Mortimer, to be released by SpectreVision and Voltage in 2020. The film, starring Joe Manganiello, premiered at Beyond Fest 2020 and was in the official competition of the Sitges International Film Festival, where it was nominated for Best Picture.

Halyna married a Los Angeles-based attorney Matthew Hutchins and they remained together until Halyna’s death. Matthew is currently practicing law at a law firm called Latham & Watkins. During their 16-year span, the couple enjoyed every bit of their life together and also raised a son Andros who is currently nine years old.

Halyna Hutchins was killed in a prop gun incident on the set of Rust on October 21, 2022. During the filming of the movie Rust, Alec Baldwin cocked and fired a gun intended to be loaded with blanks. Halyna was flown off the set of Rust, who began filming at Bonanza Creek Ranch this month. The shot also injured film director Joel Souza, who was receiving emergency medical attention at a Santa Fe hospital.

The International Cinematographers Guild confirmed Halyna’s death, stating that she died from injuries sustained on set.
