Jake Gelof is an American collegiate baseball third baseman for the Virginia Cavaliers. He set the single-season and career records for home runs, RBI, and total bases at the University of Virginia.
He was named Second Team All-America by the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings and Perfect Game and Third Team All-America by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association/Collegiate Baseball Newspaper/Baseball America/D1Baseball.com.
Early life
Jake Gelof was born on February 25, 2002. Gelof grew up in the coastal town of Rehoboth, Delaware. Adam and Kelly Gelof, both lawyers, raised their Jewish son. Zack Gelof, a 2019-21 University of Virginia Baseball team member, was a second-round pick by the Oakland Athletics in 2021, is currently with the Athletics organization, and played for Team Israel at the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
Gelof attended Cape Henlopen High School in Delaware for his junior through senior years. He was on the baseball team for two years. In his sophomore year, he was the all-conference goalie for the school’s soccer team after recording eight shutouts.
In both baseball and football, he was named to the Freshman and Sophomore Academic All-Conference teams. When it came to baseball, he was Perfect Game in Delaware’s pick for the class of 2020 and their top shortstop.
Jake Gelof Career
After his sophomore year, he decided to finish his high school career at IMG Academy (’20) in Bradenton, Florida. Gelof threw a 91-mph fastball (and threw 92 mph from infield and 94 mph from outfield) and ran the 60-yard sprint in 6.95 seconds in the early months of 2019.
After graduating high school, he played summer collegiate baseball for the Brockton Rox of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League, where he batted .281/.372/.422 with eight doubles (tie for seventh in the league), two triples (in fourth place), two homers, and 19 RBIs in 128 at-bats, mostly playing shortstop.
Gelof pursued his interest in media studies at the University of Virginia. During his freshman season, he hit .252/.336/.468 with 23 runs, 8 doubles, 4 homers, and 15 RBIs in 111 at-bats. Four of his home runs came in the playoffs alone. He and his older brother, Zack Gelof, both served in the infield when the team reached the College World Series in 2021.
Gelof went on to play for the Kalamazoo Growlers of the Northwoods League with bats, where he hit .370 (third in the league)/.445/.597 (third) with 10 doubles, 5 home runs, and 21 RBIs in 119 at-bats. Gelof switched to third base in 2022, just before his sophomore season. On February 27, 2022, he hit the cycle, the first time a Virginia player had done so in 21 years.
Virginia Cavaliers
The next day, he was named Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Player of the Week after going 9-10 with four home runs and 15 RBIs during the series. During the season, Gelof was nominated as a potential winner of the NCBWA Golden Spikes Award and the Dick Howser Trophy. Gelof was selected as a 2022 First Team All-ACC selection and a 2022 First Team CoSIDA Academic All-American.
Gelof started the following summer with the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod Baseball League, where he played in seven games before being called up to play for the United States collegiate team. Kicking off his junior year in 2023, Gelof was named to the Preseason All-America First Team by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, the NCBWA, and Perfect Game, and to the Preseason All-America Second Team by D1Baseball.
He is the 35th player in the award’s history to be nominated for a Golden Spikes Award in more than one season. When it comes to home runs, RBI, and home runs in a single season, Gelof is unrivaled at UVA. Baseball author Jim Callis believes that Gelof is a potential first-round pick or pick-up in the 2023 Major League Baseball Draft, which will take place July 9-11, 2023, and that Gelof has the arm to play on the third base to stay pros.
