Jane Park is probably one of the LPGA Tour veterans returning to the pro scene. Her most notable accomplishment is winning the US Women’s Amateur Championship and getting equality at the lower amateur level at the 2006 US Women’s Open.
On the LPGA Tour, Park has had 16 top-10 finishes. Park has just started playing competitive golf again after taking a two-year hiatus to look after their daughter Grace, who suffered severe brain damage in 2021.
Early life
Jane Park was born on December 15, 1986, in Chicago, Illinois. She started playing golf at age 11 and later moved to Rancho Cucamonga, California. She spent a year at UCLA and was named to the 2005 senior All-American team. Park also represented the United States in the Curtis Cup in 2004 and 2006.
Park had a stellar amateur career, reaching the finals of three USGA events. In the US Women’s Amateur Championship game in 2003, she was defeated by Virada Nirapathpongporn. In 2004, she lost to Julieta Granada in the US Junior Girls’ Final.
She defeated Amanda McCurdy 2-0 in the finals but then bounced back to win the US Women’s Amateur Championship that year. In 2006, Park placed 10th at the US Women’s Open, which was the year’s highest placing by an amateur. She turned professional in August 2006 at the age of 19.
Jane Park Career
Jane Park joined the LPGA Tour in 2007 after placing 18th in the Final Qualifying Tournament in December 2006. In 2007, she took part in part of the program of the LPGA Tour and also took part in the Futures Tour. Park returned to the last qualifier after finishing 109th on the LPGA Tour money list that year.
She triumphed with a score of 17 under par and earned full LPGA Tour membership for 2008. Park had her best season on the LPGA Tour in 2008 when she earned over $630,000 and was 29th on the money list. Park has had four top-10 performances, including second place at the P&G Beauty NW Arkansas Championship and the SBS Open in Turtle Bay.
Rise to Fame
In addition, Jane Park finished in the top 10 twice in 2009 and once in 2010. Park continued to play on the LPGA Tour until 2021, when she had to quit golf to care for her daughter Grace, who suffered a series of undiagnosed brain seizures that resulted in severe brain damage while Park attended the Ascendant LPGA in April 2021. Grace was diagnosed with intractable epilepsy and required constant care and therapy.
Park made her comeback to golf in July 2023 when she played partnering with Paula Creamer at the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational. It was her first event in two years and she was nervous but excited to see her LPGA family again. Her daughter Grace was in attendance and her husband Pete Godfrey, an LPGA caddy, was on her bag.
The event also benefited Park through the sale of hats and the donation of proceeds to the Golf4Her Foundation and the Epilepsy Foundation. Park has also appeared on various media outlets including Golf Channel, Golf Digest, and Golfweek to tell her story and raise awareness about epilepsy.
