Jillian Shippee is an American Hammer Thrower. She has won the New Balance Nationals hammer throw All-America and national titles twice and the New Balance Nationals weight throw national championship for 2017.
She smashed both the indoor weight throw and hammer throw records in New York. Her team won the 2017 New York outdoor state championship, and she participated in both indoor and outdoor throws during her four years of high school, serving as captain for two of those years.
Early Life
Jillian Elise Shippee is the daughter of David and Bonnie Shippee. She was born on April 19. Jonathan, her sibling, swung a baseball bat for Monmouth University from 2009 to 2012. She was a four-year soccer goalkeeper – three-year varsity letter winner, and 2016 NY Suburban Council Champions.
Jillian was also chosen twice to the NY Suburban Council All-Star Team, and team captain as a senior. She has joined both the National Honor Society and the National Science Honor Society. She served as president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council and is a High honor roll student.
Jillian Shippee Career
In 2017-18, she won second-team All-America honors in the hammer throw at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a 14th-place mark of 200-5. With her fifth-place throw of 204-0 (62.18m) at the NCAA East Preliminary Round, she secured a trip to Eugene, Oregon.
At the USATF Junior Outdoor Championship hammer throw, she earned 2nd spot. She set a new personal best of 210-6 (64.16m) to qualify for the IAAF World Championships. Due to a clerical error, she advanced to the final round of the IAAF World U20 Championship. She ended her campaign in 13th place.
She moved up six spots in the final to finish sixth with a record of 201-4 and won second-team All-ACC accolades after throwing 202-2 for fourth at ACC Outdoors in the women’s hammer throw. In the shot put, she placed 15th with a mark of 41-10 1/2, while in the weight throw, she placed seventh with a lifetime best of 63-11 (19.48m).
Both of these performances were made in the ACC Indoor Championships. She just won the hammer throw at the Virginia Challenge and the Miami Hurricane Collegiate Invitational. At the Battle of the Blues, she threw a career-best 43 feet, three inches (13.18 meters) in the shot put, and at the UCF Black and Gold Challenge, she threw 199 feet, six inches (60.82 meters) to win the hammer throw.
Rise to Fame
Jillian Shippee finished in the top five in 14 of her races as a freshman. In 2018-2019, she qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Round in the women’s hammer throw (FOUL) and set an ACC championship meet record, a conference record, and her fifth UNC school record to win the ACC outdoor women’s hammer throw title.
She established a new school hammer throw record at three consecutive meets: the VertKlasse Meeting, Raleigh Relays, and Battle of the Blues. After competing in the Battle of the Blues, she was recognized as the top female athlete in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
After her performance at Clemson’s Tiger Paw Invitational, where she threw 65 feet, 0.5 inches (19.82 meters), she is now third on the all-time list for the University of North Carolina women’s weight throw.
In the first meet of the indoor season, she threw a school record of 43-7.75 (13.30m) in the shot put. She represented the United States in the 2019 World University Games in Naples, Italy, throwing the hammer. Jill finished in 13th spot (59.42m), earning a spot on the ACC Academic Honor Roll.
She won consecutive weight throw titles at the Dick Taylor Carolina Challenge and the Virginia Tech Invitational in 2019-2020 before suffering an injury. The COVID-19 outbreak put a damper on her outdoor season. She was put on the 2019-20 ACC Academic Honor Roll. She also sat on the Student-Athlete Advisory Council and spoke for women’s track and field.
