Kevin Maxen, assistant strength coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars, made history by becoming the first male coach in a US men’s professional sports league to publicly speak out on the issue of homosexuality. He said he no longer wanted to “lie” or be “scared” about his personal life. He is also the second openly gay coach in the NFL, after former 49ers assistant Katie Sowers, who came out as a lesbian in 2016.
Maxen revealed his sexual orientation in an interview with Outsports on July 21, 2023, just a week before the Jaguars’ training camp began. He said he wants to be vocal about helping people live the way they want to live, but he also wants to live simply and not be afraid of how people will react.
Early life
Maxen was born on January 8, 1992, in Houston, Texas. He is of African American and Jewish descent. He grew up around football and other sports and developed a passion for fitness and strength training.
Kevin attended Rice University and played as a linebacker for the Division III football team. In 2017 he completed his studies in kinesiology.
Kevin Maxen Career
After college, Maxen pursued a career as a strength coach. From 2018-2019 he worked at Baylor University helping coach the soccer team and other athletes. He then transferred to Vanderbilt University in 2020, where he served as an assistant strength coach for the football program.
In 2021, he joined the Jacksonville Jaguars as an associate strength coach under head coach Urban Meyer. He is responsible for developing and implementing strength and conditioning programs for players and for monitoring their progress and performance.
Maxen said he loves his job and enjoys working with the Jaguars’ staff and players. He said he hopes to inspire others by being himself and doing what he loves.
“As a Black Jew, who has dated both men and women and served as a strength coach at the highest level in professional football, I have learned that my appearance, my beliefs, and especially the person I am physically or emotionally attracted to should not affect how I or other people perceive my worth. And it certainly shouldn’t dictate what I think I’m capable of.”
