Nick Martinez is a professional baseball pitcher from the United States. He is currently a member of the San Diego Padres team in Major League Baseball (MLB). However, he has also played for the Texas Rangers, San Diego Padres, Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, and Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks of Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB). At Fordham University in Bronx, NY, he spent three seasons as a second baseman, hitting .295 with four homers and 66 RBI. Nick was the first Fordham player to make the majors since RHP Pete Harnisch in 2001.
Early life
Nick Martinez, whose parents are Nick Martinez Sr. and Annie Martinez, was born on August 5, 1990, in Miami, Florida. Before joining the majors, he played baseball at Belen Jesuit Prep in Miami, Florida (graduating in 2008).
Nick is also a one-time Olympian, winning a silver medal with Team USA at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. When Juan Soto was added to the Padres during the 2022 trade deadline, Nick changed his jersey number from 22 to 21. When Soto asked Nick what he wanted in exchange for his uniform number, Nick jokingly replied that he wanted a boat. Martinez attended Belen Jesuit Preparatory School in Miami, Florida, and then transferred to Fordham University, where he participated in baseball. As a backup pitcher, he appeared in 15 games over two seasons and had a 1–3 record with a 5.33 ERA. However, Martinez spent most of his time on the field as a second baseman, where he was a prolific player. In three seasons and 148 games, he hit .295 with 4 homers, 66 runs, 167 hits, and 22 stolen bases. He is the seventh mountaineer to make it to Major League Baseball (MLB) and the 34th graduate of Fordham University.
Texas Rangers
In the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft, Nick was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 18th round at Fordham University. His pro career began with the AZL Rangers, and he played for the Low-A Spokane Indians, posting a 2.75 combined ERA in 10 games.
On March 26, 2014, Martinez was named the fifth starter for the Rangers. He was officially added to the 40-man roster on April 5 and made his major league debut. During his first start against the Tampa Bay Rays, Martinez pitched six innings, recorded three strikeouts, and conceded three earned runs on four hits.
Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters
