Sabrina Ionescu is an American professional basketball player and playing for the New York Liberty of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). She previously played college basketball for the Oregon Ducks. She is a multi-award-winning personality who has earned the honor of being named the NCAA all-time leader in career triple-doubles.
Although she began her career in the WNBA, she has risen to become a prominent national player. She won the FIBA Americas U16 Championship with a gold medal and won two more gold medals for her participation in the FIBA U17 World Championship and the Pan American Games.

Early life
Sabrina Ionescu was born on December 6, 1997 to Romanian-American parents and grew up in Walnut Creek, California. Her father’s name is Dan Ionescu, who fled communist Romania at the time of the 1989 revolution. During this time her father’s wife was Liliana Blaj, who lived separately from her only husband. During the revolution, Dan thought his then-wife would join him in the US after a few months, but she wasn’t able to move to the US until 1995. By that time, Dan had moved to the Northern California areas and settled into his own limousine service where he had several family members.
Sabrina was only three years old when she chose basketball for her free time. She was born with her twin brother named Edward, also named Eddy, who was born just 18 minutes after Sabrina was born. Edward has also developed into a basketball player who is involved with various national teams. Sabrina had to go to middle school, where there was no girls’ basketball team. She refused to play with the boys and instead was told to play with dolls. But since Sabrina was mature enough by that point, she responded to recruit the girls and allow the school team to play.

Back in December 2019, Sabrina Ionescu turned 22, thereby becoming eligible to declare her presence for the WNBA draft. Despite being named one of the possible top picks by analysts and ESPN, Sabrina stated in an open letter that she would rather return to Oregon for her senior season. The letter was published in The Players’ Tribune in April 2019.
On April 17, 2020, Sabrina was selected by New York Liberty overall in the 2020 WNBA Draft. While signed for Liberty, Sabrina made her debut on July 25th. She later had her second game with Liberty on July 29 when she faced the Dallas Wings where she had a record 33 points, 7 assists and 7 rebounds in 34 minutes of play.
Back in August 2020, Sabrina injured her left ankle in the second quarter against the Atlanta Dream. The next day she was diagnosed with a grade 3 sprain and was initially told that she would rather skip her whole month to recover. However, she ended up not playing the entire first pro season.
At the start of the next season in May 2021, Sabrina set a record with her first professional triple-double. During the game, she had 26 points, 12 assists, and 10 rebounds, becoming the youngest player in the WNBA to make history with a double-triple record.
Personal life
Back in August 2021, Sabrina shocked her fans by sharing pictures of a “boy” on her Instagram account to mark his birthday. Following the release of these images, fans of Sabrina began speculating as to whether or not Sabrina is dating someone, and if so, who that person is.
While posting or sharing the man’s picture, she captioned it, “30. Congratulations to my person! Always smiling with you. #HG.” During the time, people started searching for the better half of Sabrina she was referring to in the post, and it turned out to be soccer player Hroniss Grasu, who at the time was known as Free agent played and had a career history with many professional teams such as the Chicago Bears, Miami Dolphins and San Francisco 49ers.
