Sam was born on June 5, 1997, in Dana Point, California, United States of America. His parents’ names are Chris Darnold and Michael Darnold. His sister Franki is a college volleyball player at the University of Rhode Island. He was very athletic from a young age and used to play football and basketball. He finished his senior season with a total of 3,000 passing yards, 39 touchdowns, 800 rushing yards, and 13 rushing touchdowns. He was later rated a four-star recruit by Rivials.com and ranked 179th best player overall. He played for USC from 2015 to 2017. For his freshman year, he was redshirted. The next season, he played against the Utah Utes, the Washington Huskies, Penn State, and other teams. His team was also invited to play at the 2017 Rose Bowl. In 2017, he played as a sophomore against Stanford, the Texas Longhorns, and many more. He also played at the Pac-12 Conference Championship and the 2017 Cotton Bowl.

He made his pro debut on August 10, 2018, against the Atlanta Falcons. He competed against the Detroit Lions, Quandre Diggs, the Miami Dolphins, the Cleveland Browns, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Denver Broncos, and many more. In 2019, he competed against various teams like the Buffalo Bills, Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins, New York Giants, Oakland Raiders, Cincinnati Bengals, and many more.
He finished his season with 3,024 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, 13 interceptions, 33 carries for 62 rushing yards, and two rushing touchdowns.
